Hyderabad techie lynched in Karnataka’s Bidar over Whatsapp rumors

Bengaluru, July 13. A 32-year-old man from Hyderabad was lynched on Friday (July 13) in Karnataka’s Bidar district over WhatsApp-driven rumours of child-lifting. Four others were also attacked but police managed to save them.

The incident took place at Murki village of Bidar district where the locals mistook them to be child-lifters. The men, travelling in a red Maruti Swift, met with an accident after the locals chased them on motorcycles.

The deceased Mohammad Azam was a software engineer in Google.

Family members of the victims said that they had stopped at a dhaba opposite a school where one of them – a Qatari national – began distributing chocolates to the children.

The four were rescued by the Bidar police led by SP Devraj two hours after they were gheraoed by the locals.

Bengaluru State Home Minister G Parameshwara said that he is looking closely into the matter and will take action soon. He said complaints of child-lifting had come earlier from Bidar and Gulbarga district and the problem is quite common there.

Police have detained at least 30 villagers at the Kamalnagar Police Station. WhatsApp group admin, Manoj, and the person who made the fake post have also been arrested.
